Not Your Mother's Hair Styling

There's a little story about how I came about this brand. My mum owns a town house in Katanning (3 hours south of Perth, Western Australia) and because she lives so far away, I go down every 3-6 months to catch up and spend some quality time with my mummy. With a population of 4000 you can imagine it is a quaint little town.

After getting our hair cut in town, we went on a shopping date of the local shops and found this brand in one of the chemists. I was on the hunt for a sea salt spray and mum was looking for something to add texture to her hair.

I picked up the Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray and All Eyes On Me Shape and Shine Hairspray too see if they stood up to my Fudge Iced Raspberry Strong Hold Hairspray or Tony and Guy Sea Salt Spray.

Sea Salt Spray:
My first impression is that they both smell delicious. The Sea Salt spray has a sort of light caramel scent. It's not particularly strong or overpowering but it does make your hair smell quite nice is someone shoves their nose in your hair.
One of the reasons why I purchased the sea salt spray is because of the minimal ingrediants in it. The Tony and Guy is chocked full of five different types of parabens* plus phenoxyethnol**!
I wouldn't say that NYM is 'natural' by any means, but it doesnt contain any parabens or phenoxyethnol. With only 9 ingredients  i feel a little more comfortable spraying this all over my head and inhaling the fumes.
Tony and Guy is in a generic pump bottle that squirts out short pumps of product. This is not bad but compared to the NYM, not my favourite. The NYM sprays more like a fine mist over the hair which makes it far easier to spray all over the hair.
I find that the NYM holds better in my hair personally. I don't know if it's because it's 'infused with dead sea salt and sea kelp' or just because my hair likes it better.

Hairspray:
The hairspray has nice orange blossom scent and considering its 'infused with lemongrass and orange flower' that's hardly surprising.
It's not got as much of a hold as the Fudge hairspray but NYM is not marketed as a strong hold hairspray. NYM shape and shine I think is better suited for light hold in curls or straightening so that the hair doesn't look static or crunchy. The spray on the Fudge bottle works a lot better than the NYM. In terms of ingredients, they are fairly similar.
I think considering Not Your Mother's is $14.95 a bottle and Fudge goes on special at Woolworths for $5 I will continue to repurchase the Fudge. I also love the scent and love the hold and finish of Fudge in my hair compared to NYM.

Verdict:
I like the brand and have been enjoying testing out the products. I'm definitely going to repurchase the sea salt spray but will probably leave the hairspray in the future. My mum also bought a bottle of the sea salt spray and she's really been enjoying using it. Not Your Mother's products seem to be easy to use, good quality products. The packaging and names of products are cute and sweet. It's a shame that the brand is not more accessible in Australia.

Not Your Mother's is not readily available in Perth in Priceline etc. If I can find it in Katanning I'm sure that there would be places available but it is certainly not easy to find online. I've found that i-glamour.com ships to Australia and stocks Not Your Mother's product.

Have you tried Not You Mother's before? Do you love the brand or just think it's average? If anyone knows easier places to purchase please let me know!

*Studies show that paraben's are linked to cancer, more specifically breast cancer. Paraben's are a type of preservative. Their are different types of paraben's, some more harmful than others. There is information available online to find out the toxicity of the paraben. These studies show that using multiple paraben's exponentially increase the absorption of the toxins into your body. It is worth noting that some natural brands such as Lush use paraben's in their liquid products. Lush in particular make an effort to use minimal amounts of the least toxic paraben's available.
**Phenoxythenol is also a preservative used in liquid cosmetic items. It is considered toxic if ingested and can suppress the immune system. Used in conjunction with other preservatives it can cause respiratory issues and, some scientists believe, brain damage in infants.
